The Quran is the central religious text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be the literal word of Allah as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Jibreel over a period of approximately 23 years. It consists of 114 chapters known as surahs, arranged roughly by length from the longest to the shortest, with the exception of Al-Fatiha which opens the book. The Quran contains 6,236 verses (ayat) covering matters of belief, worship, law, morality, history, and guidance for every aspect of human life.
Muslims regard the Quran as the final and most complete revelation from Allah, confirming and completing the earlier scriptures given to prophets such as Ibrahim, Musa, Dawud, and Isa (peace be upon them all). It was revealed in Arabic, and the original Arabic text has been preserved without alteration since the time of its revelation. Millions of Muslims around the world have memorised the entire Quran, a tradition known as hifz that has continued unbroken for over fourteen centuries.
The surahs of the Quran are classified as either Makki (revealed in Makkah before the migration to Madinah) or Madani (revealed in Madinah after the migration). Makki surahs generally focus on matters of faith, the oneness of Allah, the afterlife, and stories of previous prophets. Madani surahs tend to address legal rulings, social organisation, and the practical aspects of building a just society. Together, they form a comprehensive guide that Muslims turn to for spiritual nourishment, legal guidance, and daily devotion.
Reading the Quran is an act of worship that carries immense reward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that whoever reads a single letter from the Book of Allah earns a good deed, and each good deed is multiplied tenfold. Regular recitation is encouraged at all times, with particular emphasis on reading after Fajr prayer, during the last third of the night, and throughout the blessed month of Ramadan when the Quran was first revealed.
